WHERE AND HOW TO SAMPLE (Mt. Pack)

You have been given two plastic quart bottles and one small 1 00 ml bottle. The larger plastic bottles are marked A and B, the small bottle is for Coliform Bacteria.

Bottle A: It is recommended that sample bottles A be taken at a faucet as close to the well as possible. Run water for five minutes, open the bottle and fill to top, close. Store in a refrigerated place. This bottle to sample is for Aluminum, Arsenic, Fluorides, Iron, Gross Alpha, Manganese, Nitrate and pH.

Bottle B: (First Draw Test) This should be the first water out of an inside faucet after it has been in the pipes for at least six hours (the first water out of a faucet in the morning will work). Fill to top and close. Store in a refrigerated place. This bottle is to sample for Lead and Copper.

Small 100 ml bottle for Coliform Bacteria testing: This bottle is sterile and should not be opened until you are ready to fill it with water. The powder inside is Sodium Thiosulfate and is used to neutralize any chlorine in the water. The faucet should be clean, in good working order and far enough away from obstructions so that the sample bottle can be easily maneuvered to collect a sample without being contaminated. Turn on the\ faucet so that the water flow is a smooth steady stream of water. None of the water flow should touch the outside of the faucet. Let the water run for at least five minutes. Do not adjust the flow during the five minutes. Remove the shrink wrap from the test bottle, with one hand on the bottle and one hank on the lid, remove the lid fill the bottle and close the lid.
